A new compact-camera shape

The Insta360 Luna Ultra combines a camera, stabilized gimbal and removable monitor in one compact device. Co-engineered with Leica, it uses Summicron-branded optics and a one-inch main sensor capable of 8K capture. A second telephoto camera broadens the framing options without requiring an interchangeable lens.

The detachable screen is the idea

A screen that can be removed from the camera changes where the operator can stand. It can simplify low angles, self-recording and discreet placement while preserving a live view. For solo creators, that flexibility may matter as much as the headline resolution.

More than a phone replacement

Phones are extraordinarily capable, but their stabilization, battery management and ergonomics still involve compromise during sustained shooting. A dedicated gimbal camera gives movement its own controls and keeps a phone free for notes, communication and publishing. The Luna Ultra’s 10-bit I-Log mode is intended to leave more room for color work afterward.

The questions for real production

An 8K label does not guarantee a better finished film. Sensor readout, rolling shutter, autofocus, audio workflow, heat and battery life will decide whether the camera can handle long assignments. The quality of the transition between the main and telephoto cameras will also be important.

A meaningful collaboration

Leica’s involvement is most interesting when it affects color, flare and rendering rather than branding alone. The Luna Ultra points toward a future in which compact cameras are defined less by a fixed category and more by the complete shooting experience they provide.

Price, availability and kit choice

The Luna Ultra launched June 10, 2026 and is already sold through Insta360’s official regional stores. Because a single global US list price was not published on the announcement page, a careful guide is roughly $800–$850 for the standard camera based on official regional pricing; taxes, bundles and market availability can move the final number. The standard kit is the cleanest starting point for buyers who already own audio and support accessories. Creator bundles may be convenient, but they should be judged item by item so that a microphone, battery handle or wide adapter is not purchased twice.
